Preventing students from Joining Google Meets when a teacher is not present
Updated September 2020
Students can not create their own Google classroom. Nor can they join a class before a teacher when the teacher uses nick-names e.g. “Bobs class”. This is true even if they copy the string associated with the meeting: e.g. https://meet.google.com/xxx-xxxx-xxx
Creating a meet by calendar invite has no such restrictions and students will be able to join before teachers.
Students cannot rejoin a Google classroom if the teacher is the last person to leave the class. In the past a class could take up to 90 seconds to become inactive. Our testing shows that it is nearly instant now.
Google Meets will soon support “Break out rooms” but that feature is in beta. We'll make it available when we become aware that it's become active within our domain.
